“You stepped in and helped us when we needed you most”

- Tom Scargill

THE CHIEF executive of Overgate Hospice has thanked the Calderdale public for helping it survive during what has been an “extraordinary year”.

The Calderdale public have again responded to the hospice’s calls for help with donations and fundraising schemes throughout the year.

And outgoing chief executive Janet Cawthray says the continuing support of the public will be essential next year.

She said: “Our Day Hospice was initially forced to close to ensure the safety of our vulnerable patients however, the lockdown meant that these people needed our help and support

more than ever. So we made the brave decision to try and run our Day Hospice sessions virtually, using Zoom. This has turned out to be a lifeline for so many as the pandemic has lasted months and vulnerable local people have faced isolation.

“During lockdown, people dealing with the loss of a loved one were unable to surround themselves with their normal support system and needed our help.

“So our counsellors immediately moved online to ensure they could continue to provide this vital support. It also led to the launch of a dedicated support line to help those in our community who had been affected by the crisis.

“Our Inpatient Unit has remained open throughout, But our staff have had to adapt to long shifts wearing PPE and changes in the way they care, unable to offer a cup of tea or a loving touch at the most difficult time.

“On top of all of this we have had to worry about the financial impact of the pandemic. Our shops have been closed, events cancelled and our usual fundraising activities ground to a halt. But we have been overwhelmed by the incredible support of you, our community. You stepped in and helped us when we needed you the most, and it is thanks to you that we have been able to continue our care.

“For this, we, as well as the patients and families in our care, will be forever grateful.

“Because of you, Overgate has survived this incredibly difficult year.

“2021 will be an exceptionally challenging year for us.

“Your support will continue to be essential to our survival and we hope that you continue to hold Overgate in your hearts as this crisis continues.”
