Summerfield relishing his central role for Town

- Tom Scargill

OF ALL the new arrivals at FC Halifax Town this season, Luke Summerfield’s impact has been felt the most.

The midfielder has scored three goals this season, all from the penalty spot, and has been the heartbeat of the side, combining tenacity and a will-towin with a superb reading of the game and range of passing.

“I’ve really enjoyed the start to the season, on a personal level it’s good to have been playing games and doing well,” said Summerfield, who joined Town after being released by Wrexham.

“But it’s all about what the team do and I feel like we’ve had a great December and hopefully we can carry it on.”

When asked how he sees his role in the Town side, Summerfield said: “Whatever I get told to do to be honest!

“Whatever the gaffer sees my role as I’ll give it my best shot.

“We’ve used a few different formations but I’ve been playing in central midfield, a bit deeper, but whatever the role I get told to do, I’ll give it my best,

“On a personal level, the most important thing for me is that I’ve been enjoying my football.

“If you’re enjoying your football and playing with a smile on your face, for me that’s the most important thing, and being part of a successful team who’ve been doing well.

“Some of the results we’ve not warranted but the play we’ve had in most of the games has been excellent and I’ve enjoyed playing in the games.

“And on a personal level, training every day and playing as many games as possible. I’ve only missed one game, which is pleasing for me and hopefully that continues.”

Summerfield’s vision and technique have been displayed in passes ranging from round the corner to team-mates a few yards away to long, raking balls across the pitch.

“I’ve tried to implement my passing range and it’s nice to do that,” he said.

“The way we’ve been playing I’ve been able to implement it a lot so far and hopefully that continues.

“I enjoy assisting goals and passing, making things happen and let the goalscorers score goals.”

Town go into Saturday’s game at King’s Lynn one place and one point off the play-off spots.

“I think we can achieve as much as we want to,” was Summerfield’s assessment.

“We’ve started the season well, it’s been a crazy season so far.

“By this time you’ve ususally played half the season but we’ve still not played quite a lot of teams so far.

“So there’s still a long way to go but I feel like we’ve got a great set of boys and that can take us a long way.”
