Banned driver smashes car

- Court Reporter

AN AUDI A3 driver who brought down power lines when his speeding car smashed into a dry-stone wall and snapped a telegraph pole has been jailed for 15 months.

Jacob Rushworth, 26, was uninsured and already banned for drink-driving while police officers on mobile patrol in Salterhebble tried to stop his car after seeing him refuel at a petrol station in the early hours of October 2, 2019.

Bradford Crown Court heard how Rushworth of Green Lane, West Vale, made a determined attempt to evade the police during a six-minute pursuit which involved him driving at speeds up to 105mph.

Judge Andrew Hatton said during Rushworth’s appalling driving he went through Sowerby Bridge at 85mph on roads that were limited to 20mph.

On the B6113 Rochdale Road Rushworth was doing over 80mph, but he eventually lost control of the Audi and crashed.

Prosecutor Lucy Brown told the court that the Audi flipped over and landed in a field and the impact snapped the telegraph pole bringing down overhead power lines and disrupting the power supply in the area.

Rushworth pleaded guilty last month to the charge of dangerous driving.

Rushworth was also banned from driving for three years following release from prison and he must take an extended re-test before he can lawfully drive again.

The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the damaged Audi which had been registered to Rushworth.
