Kelly’s all heart for charity this Valentine’s Day

- Martin Shaw

A MUM-OF-TWO is to spread a little love on Valentines’ Day with a sponsored run to raise money for a great cause.

Kelly Galvin, 39, of Shelf, has been pounding the canal towpaths between Brighouse and Hebden Bridge to keep fit, both mentally and physically, during lockdown.

Kelly, who has two children Bronte, aged one, and nine-yearold Niall, decided she wanted to run 14 miles on February 14 to raise money for charity.

She chose the West Yorkshire Children’s Heart Surgery Fund.

“As it’s Valentines’ Day I wanted to raise money for a charity connected to the heart or love,” said Kelly, who is furloughed from her part-time job with a procurement company.

“I came across the children’s heart fund and that fitted perfectly.

As a mum I can really empathise with that. It’s one charity that every parent hopes they will never need to use.”

Kelly has always been into fitness and exercise and has found running helps her mind and body.

“Running is something that stops me from going completely insane with what feels like the 100th lockdown!” said Kelly.

“I’ve just had my second baby and I’m coming up to 40 and I have to train much harder than I used to have to do to keep fit and stay in trim.

“I was supposed to be doing the Leeds Half-Marathon and the Liverpool Marathon and training for the Valentines’ Day run is a focus for me to help get my fitness up and stop me from getting fat and depressed!”

Kelly, who moved to Yorkshire from Cambridge in 2015, added: “Yorkshire is the best place in the world to live but it’s a pain in the bum because it’s so hilly. That’s why I stick to the canals.”

Kelly will run her 14 miles starting and finishing at Sowerby Bridge, she will run seven miles out, turn round and run back. She will start at 7.30am and aims to complete the run within two hours.

She’ll be easily recognised by early birds as she’ll have love hearts painted on her face and arms and her leggings will also be covered in hearts.

Kelly regularly raises money for charity. Before Christmas she raised £1,300 for Overgate Hospice, Elland, by carol singing in Shelf.
