VACCINATIONS

A senior Calderdale politician has backed calls for teaching staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a priority group.

The fact that they are not considered a priority group is symptomatic of how little value is placed on education in this country. This is shown in how little we respect the teaching profession which has the onerous job of preparing future generations to help our country to prosper. And no, I am not a teacher but have enormous admiration for those who do a job which is fraught with difficulties.

Gill Ingham

Teachers and the support staff in schools have never really stopped teaching and are almost at the front like NHS staff, as they come in to contact with children from all front line workers. They should be high on the list for the vaccine.

Roy Skinner

I’m all for vaccinations but this is affecting everyone not just teachers - keyworkers haven’t had it yet. There’s lots of workers affected, it need to be given out evenly.

Julie Wright

Yes, also for careers as some not even thought off. Like the unpaid ones or ones that get carers’ allowance.

Karen Haigh

It should be a priority.

Sheila Hales

If it allows kids to return to school and puts people’s mind at ease then yes.

Chris Parker

Totally agree but would also like to see nursery staff vaccinated too.

Lorraine Roe

There are other priority groups before teachers. If they have pre-existing illnesses they’ll be called up. Some carers in nursing homes and some of the police force haven’t been vaccinated. Best advice to teachers is to teach your teenagers about wearing a mask, out of school, and stop congregating with their pals. That would probably give the teachers some protection. Personally I’m sick to death of seeing teenagers mixing. Yeah, it’s affecting their mental health but maybe they need to learn that mixing will prolong this nightmare.

TRAVEL

Travellers arriving in the UK from Covid-19 hotspots abroad will have to quarantine in a hotel from February 15.

Why are people still travelling?

RETAIL

Anne Speight

Someone is making a mint out of this.

Graham Negra

Why the 15th? Why can’t they close the borders now?

Christine Wetherell

They shouldn’t be coming into the country in the first place.

Sean Woodyatt ‘Awful’ impact on workers as Dorothy Perkins, Wallis and Burton shops close.

I’m so sad about all this,

I will not buy any clothes online, I will buy at shops and supermarkets which are still open to actually walk in.

Stella Walsh

Always loved Dorothy Perkins, was the perfect place if you didn’t want to dress like an old lady or a 13-year-old girl.

Bethany Austin

These shops have been on a downward spiral for years. Customers moved their attention to ‘fast fashion’ from stores like Primark.

This isn’t because of Covid.

Rosie Pew

Covid hasn’t helped but the downward spiral started five years ago with the expansion of online shopping, Boo

Hoo, ASOS, Amazon and supermarkets expanding their clothing range.

Anne Tetley

Shopping online for some things is a great choice but clothes you have to actually try on, touch, look at the quality. What a pain to order, try on, send back, order again.

Martin Pitman

Dorothy Perkins is my absolute favourite shop, I’m devastated it’s going, I know I can shop online, but I’m old school,...
