Stop the silly mistakes and we’ll start winning again, says Wild

“We’ve got to do the basics of out-of-possession right.

“If we don’t do that then we’re going to find it tougher and tougher to win football matches.”

Torquay have only won once in their last five home games but are seven points clear at the top of the league, although second-placed Sutton and thirdplaced Notts County both have three games in hand over The Gulls.

Torquay needed a 90th minute equaliser in their last game to rescue a 1-1 draw at home to Wealdstone.

The Town boss says he is not worried ahead of the game, despite Halifax’s loss to Barnet in midweek.

“I’m not apprehensive at all,” he said.

“The result on Tuesday magnifies because of where they (Barnet) are, but in terms of general play, you cut the silly mistakes out, we come away with a 1-0 win.

“OK that’s not the case, but that’s the top and bottom of it in my eyes.”

Torquay won the reverse fixture 2-1 at The Shay in November, with Connor LemonheighEvans scoring the winner seven minutes from time after Jamie Allen had cancelled out Asa Hall’s opener.

Wild believes his side will be determined to bounce back from the Barnet loss.

“They were shouting and balling at each other after the game, that shows they care,” he said

”They’re frustrated but everybody’s got an answer to the problem, the answer to the problem is stop the silly mistakes and we start winning football matches again.”

Wild said midfielder Reuben Noble-Lazarus is fit, despite not being involved on Tuesday and not playing for the club yet since signing last summer.

“He was just not in the squad,” he said. “We covered all positions.”

■ Town have signed goalkeeper Chris Renshaw on loan from Witton Albion after backup keeper Harrison DavisonHale picked up an injury.

Davison-Hale has sustained a broken finger, requiring Town to sign Renshaw on a month’s loan.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper signed for Witton in summer 2019 after leaving Premier League club Everton.

He joined The Toffees from Oldham, wher he worked with Town boss Pete Wild.

■ There will be no coverage of Halifax’s game at Torquay on Saturday on the Courier website but you can watch the game live on BT Sport at 5.20pm.
