Take this litter issue seriously

-

Andrew Tagg, Pellon

READING the article in the Courier (Action to be taken in Calderdale against litter louts, February 18) one must ask what planet is Coun Lynn on?

Her claim that wardens issuing 87 fixed penalty notices in nine months was paying off! What, 10 fixed penalty notices per month of a £80 fine Whoopee!

Obviously, she has not been out and about in her own ward, Warley and North Halifax? May I ask did the 87 people drop 100 tonnes of litter each? I am sorry Coun Lynn but it is not having an effect, just look around.

The Shroggs Tip area adjacent to Brakenbed Lane

- on Sunday I was collecting litter and there must be 50 bags at least strewed across this area. When all the leaves have gone you get a true picture of the level of litter blighting our environment.

I agree with Coun Lynn, it is time to get tough on litter louts andthe council can start by setting the fixed penalty at the maximum of £150. However, to enforce this the council needs more resources.

Therefore, I suggest they incorporate the use of private companies, as they do for parking enforcement, to increase patrols across the borough. It’s only by increasing the number of fixed penalties and prosecutions will this issue be resolved.

People who drop litter, or fly tip, have a complete disregard to the communities they blight and are no different to those who commit criminal acts of antisocial behaviour.

It’s time for the council to put its money where its mouth is, and take enforcement seriously.
