Chef serves up a helpful idea

- Tom Scargill

COVID-19 HAS not been easy for the hospitality industry, but for one chef, it has taken an interesting turn by incorporating his passion for food into his new office job.

Chef Will Bonfield, of Halifax, found himself returning home from Dubai to start his journey of owning a restaurant when the pandemic hit in March 2020.

Will had to postpone his dreams due to the pandemic and found himself jobless for the first time in his life. His friend suggested he apply for a position at The Only Way Togo, who provide a booking system, websites and photography to the hospitality industry.

Now Will leads ‘Cook-a-long with Will’ every week over Zoom. Will emails the team at the start of each week the affordable shopping list and the equipment needed. The cook-athe long then takes place the following Friday afternoon.

The zoom event lasts around 30 minutes as Will advises them on each step. The interactive cook along allows everyone to ask Will for advice when needed and to also do each step at same time. The team are accompanied by their children whom they are home schooling during the pandemic or other family members that are on furlough from their own jobs. It has been a welcome break for the team and their families during the difficult time.

Chef Will’s cook-a-long has boosted morale within the team and at home, with everyone sharing their photos.

“I just love cooking,” Will said.

“I thought cooking with people would be a good way to break up the day and give them something to look forward too. It started as a bit of fun, but it’s amazing to be helping and inspiring people.”
