We’re blessed in Yorkshire with many special places
I WONDER have you ever noticed that there seems to be something of a connection between churches and walking groups.
Perhaps there is a link between walking with friends and finding a peace and comfort in the countryside.
Could it be that the gap between heaven and earth becomes thin when you can appreciate the wonder of God’s creation in the company of friends?
Iknowfrommyown experience that walking a very normal pathway alone or in the company of a few friends can change what was normal into something special – perhaps even sacred.
Here in Yorkshire (God’s own country) we are blessed with some spectacular scenery and some very special places.
One of these can be found up in the Dales near Kettlewell. I’m thinking of Parcevall Hall, a wonderful, peaceful place for a retreat.
The gardens are open to the public and are quite magnificent – well worth the drive to get there.
But there is something more than the quiet or the peace, there is something special.
It’s a place that can be described as being “drenched in prayer”.
Walking the gardens you can appreciate the beauty of the horticulture but there is something more – something just beyond our understanding. Parcevall Hall is not unique in this, there are lots of places that for one reason or another are special or sacred. Perhaps you have your own special place.
Some people find it hard to be still or to be quiet.
I think that’s quite understandable as our lives are filled with all sorts of demands that have to be dealt with, but visiting a special place can help us to unwind and to be at peace. In a way the place can take over and almost insist we take time.
If you have a sacred space, tell me about it!
