Road closures as parklets to be installed

- Ian Hirst

NEW SEATING areas will be created in parking spaces along the Brighouse high street.

A number of “parklets” that have been proposed by the Brighouse Town Deal Board, with the help of Calderdale Council, will be installed along Commercial Street.

Parklets are car parking spaces that are transformed into a community space with benches, seats and planters.

Commercial Street will be closed from 6.30pm until 5am on March 30 and 31 was the work is carried out for the installation.

Calderdale Council’s Director of Regeneration and Strategy, Shelagh O’Neill, said: “Two new ‘parklet’ areas are being created on Commercial Street to widen the pavement area, increase the currently limited seating and provide aesthetic features such as additional planters.

“This scheme is being carried out using accelerated funding provision from the Government’s Towns Deals Fund, which is to be used to fund improvements that will make a difference straight away.

“In addition, Brighouse is set to receive up to £25 million to fund further improvement projects.

“These are exciting times for Brighouse, with the significant investment through the Towns Fund bringing huge benefits to the town.”

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and strategy, Councillor Jane Scullion, said there is currently a lack of seating in the town centre, so a number of “parklets” will be installed to widen the pavement area and provide seating and aesthetic features like plants or artwork.

“Any parking space lost through the creation of these areas will be offset by new parking spaces created at the Wilkinson’s end of Commercial Street, where there are currently double yellow lines,” said Coun Scullion.
