Nev was ‘truly inspirational’

FORMER POLICE officer and community volunteer Neville Sharp has died.

He leaves behind a much loved wife, two daughters, three grandchildren and many friends.

Nev lived in Calderdale for over 50 years dedicating his life to helping others through a career in the police force and volunteering with other organisations.

Nev, joined the police in 1963, was initially posted to Penistone, South Yorkshire before joining the Police Dog Section and being posted to Calderdale soon after.

In 1966 he became a police dog handler and in 1977 gained the rank of Sergeant being responsible for dog handlers/ teams in Halifax and Keighley.

He was later attached to the West Yorkshire Dog Training School in Wakefield where he was able to share his passion for working with dogs.

His interest in search and rescue developed and Nev went onto train the first cadaver dog in the North of England.

During his time with the West Yorkshire Police Nev was involved with many searches, including the Moors Murders and the Bradford City Fire.

Nev will never be forgotten but will be remembered with great admiration and affection from all who knew him.

He had a career which he loved and found a purpose in life which helped many people. He was an immensely proud man who valued family.

In a statement, Mytholmroyd-based Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team said: “Nev was a truly inspirational man and will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“From everyone at CVSRT past, present, old and new may you rest in peace.”
