Lions’ run in aid of Overgate

- Tom Scargill

STAINLAND LIONS Running Club took on a huge challenge over the Easter weekend to raise funds for Overgate Hospice.

Between them, the Lions, who are based at Heath Rugby club at West Vale, pledged to run a whopping 1,083 miles - the distance between Lands End and John O’Groats - in a 24 hour period starting on Easter Saturday morning.

When club member Leon Severn first came up with the idea, it genuinely didn’t seem achievable. The club had been shut, and the members had been unable to run together for the majority of the last 12 months. But the Lions ran 1,654 miles, with 136 club members contributed to the total mileage.

Fifty six members ran between one mile and 13 miles, 75 members ran between 13 miles and 26 miles and four members ran between 26 miles and 31 miles.

The Rushworth family ran over 80 miles between them. David Rushworth put in a solid 10, while his brother John ran 13. And David’s son Will ran further than anyone else in the club, covering 65 miles from Blackpool to Overgate Hospice.

At the time of writing, the fundraising stands at over £7,660, far exceeding expectations.

Club chairman Tim Walker said: “As a club, we would like to thank everyone who has supported any one of our runners. When the time came, our members answered the call and all went that extra mile, in some cases an extra 20 miles!”
