Gin makers win another award

- Tom Scargill

NORTHOWRAM BASED Speight’s Gin has won a Silver Medal at the World Gin Awards.

It is the third international award since the family-run company was launched.

Peter Speight, from the business, worked in security and risk management, which he has a doctorate in, but decided that it was time to do something different and after going on a ‘gin experience’ it ignited a passion and he has never looked back.

He said: “We are so delighted and wanted to thank everyone for the continued support.

“We have been developing our brand and perfecting our gins, which started with our signature gin and our aim was to create the ‘perfect gin and tonic’ based around a floral bouquet. There are 12 botanicals used in our signature gin, most of which are kept under lock and key, to ensure the recipe is a Speight family secret. There is Juniper, of course, Coriander, Orris Root, alongside, Hibiscus flowers, elderberry, rose petal, wild rosehip etc. The overall taste is a floral bouquet and is like walking into a flower garden on a hot summers day where the sweet scent hits your nose,” he added.

“Our next aim was to have our signature gin tested and put through the rigors of an expert/gin geek – and the feedback from a renowned mixologist was that it was a beautifully spiced gin with a real pinch but a round, smooth and sweet finish. Obviously, we were delighted with this feedback and our real test was what our customers thought but their feedback has been amazing.”

Speight’s Gin has previously won the Distilled Gin category at the Gin Guide Awards 2020.
