Hyde’s brace propels Town to win against Weymouth

- Tom Scargill

TOWN MANAGER Pete Wild described his side’s 3-2 victory over Weymouth as a scrappy win as The Shaymen moved back up to seventh in the National League.

Two goals from Jake Hyde and one from Tom Bradbury were enough to see off Weymouth, for whom Jake McCarthy scored twice.

“It was a scrappy win wasn’t it, we showed some really good stuff in fits and starts but didn’t show any real consistency,” said Wild.

“It’s yet another game where, what have we created, probably 15, 20 chances again?

“And probably 10 of real quality with some really good play in the final third, and then it’s the final pass, or we don’t score.

“That frustrates me because we work all week on our final third play and we don’t finish it off.

“Some of those moves in the final third you think ‘wow, that’s great’ and then that last bit, that last pass or that last shot we don’t finish it off.

“So we nearly got undone again by not taking our chances and, at the other end, a set-piece and not picking up the seconds, which has been our down fall in the last couple of weeks.

“Those two things are certainly things we can get better at. But I never felt worried, I always felt (we were) in control of the game.

“It’s nice that Hydey’s got another two as well, which was really pleasing.

“When your centre-forward scores two goals, that’s what we want him to do. Really pleased with that, and really pleased to score off a set-piece.

“When we’ve had a 10-day break we’ve always come back a bit inconsistent so hopefully that’s dusted the cobwebs off.”

With Billy Chadwick missing due to personal reasons, Jamie Allen started after his international duty with Montserrat, and won Town a penalty after 30 seconds latching onto Jeff King’s lofted pass.

Hyde’s penalty was saved by keeper Ethan Ross, but the Town striker converted the rebound for his seventh of the season.

After conceding from two set-pieces against Sutton last time out, it was particularly disappointing to see it happen again as McCarthy nodded in Sean Shields’ free-kick from close range.

There were shots on target by Earing and Kieran Green as Halifax offered the far greater threat and produced more quality on the ball.

Town had been sloppy at times but had got into good areas, and a few more precise passes could have seen them in on goal more often.

Bradbury, who scored in Town’s victory against Weymouth in December, then nodded in from close range after Neill Byrne produced an excellent header back across goal from a Town corner.

A crucial two-goal cushion was then established when Hyde fired home from inside the box.

Loanee Micah Obiero was handed his debut too - and hit the bar with two minutes remaining after an impressive cameo - as Halifax controlled the game and Weymouth waned as the clock ticked down.

Weymouth didn’t give up but Town looked hungry for more, as Earing curled a shot just wide from the edge of the box and substitute Danny Williams fired off target.

McCarthy pulled one back in added time with a superb drive from outside the box, and there was a scare moments later when Dallas fired wide, but Town held on.
