An iconic Halifax landmark was transported back in time for the filming of a hit BBC TV drama.

The cast and crew of Gentleman Jack filmed scenes for the Sally Wainwight-written drama’s second series at The Piece Hall this week.

Set designers took the Grade I listed location right back to the 19th century for the show.

The filming comes a week after cameras were spotted outside Salts Mill in Saltaire.

Set designers constructed an authentic Georgian street scene near the mill with shops such as a tailor’s and a chemist’s as well as a public house.

Wainwright series, which is based on the diaries of 19th-century Halifax diarist Anne Lister, have been ongoing for several months now.

Other scenes have been filmed in Penistone Hill Country Park, near

Haworth, and several historic buildings in York, including Fairfax House and St William’s College.

Filming has also taken place at Shibden Hall, the Listers’ ancestral seat now owned by Calderdale Council, as the series will focus on Lister and her new wife’s domestic life on the estate and their bid to become a ‘power couple’ in Halifax.

Set in 1834, the new series is played out in the context of social unrest in a rapidly industrialising Halifax where the Lister family owned business interests such as mines and mills.

Filming is expected to wrap up soon with the series likely to hit our screens later this year.
