Chris’ epic challenge to help his charity

- Jai Singh

THE OWNER of The Cricket Asylum decided to turn his cycling hobby into a fundraiser which will benefit a number of children who turn to the foundation for help.

Through a Facebook donation link, Chris Berry was able to share his journey with people who followed his progress and donated to Sowerby Bridge based organisation.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation were unable to run their annual fundraiserThe 24 Hour Netathon - which is a significant source of their funding.

Chris’s initial target was to raise £500, completing the equivalent of two ascents of Everest on his mission. This equated to roughly 70 miles per week for every week of lockdown three.

Chris said the lack of funding was hugely detrimental and that he “wanted to give back to the community who were keen but not able to compete”.

He added: “Cricket is an expensive sport. When it comes to kit, coaching and courses, it all adds up. It’s about giving kids who enjoy the sport the opportunity to play and complete on a level playing field.”

A determined Chris set off on his journey in early February, not knowing how far he would go, the severe weather he would be facing, nor how much money would be raised. Little did he know, Chris would go on to spend a whopping 65 hours on the saddle, and raise over £1000 for the foundation (so far) over a six-week period.

Although he was faced with extreme weather conditions, Chris “didn’t even bother looking out the window”, as “if I didn’t complete the ride, those who normally get support from the foundation would not get that support”.

Chris added: “I’m really thankful to everyone who donated and followed my journey.”

Through the money raised The Cricket Asylum cannow continue with its work and also offer free cricket coaching in primary schools across Calderdale.
