Historic home beside canal was first an inn

- Sally Burton

A CANALSIDE house that is Grade ll Listed, and part of Todmorden’s industrial history, is for sale priced £550,000.

In the 1700s, Dawson Weir House was the Coach and Horses Inn. Its impressive frontage, however, is Georgian, and inside, its period home style has been restored with great care.

It’s a large family home, but could also function as a holiday let or B&B. With its own entry to the canal towpath and walks galore, it is also just a stroll from the railway station.

‘Honest’ John Fielden, whose small spinning factory across the road grew to become ‘Waterside Mill’, first lived in the house with his family. It was later used for offices and as an offshoot of the mill. A crane was in the attic at one time to bring goods in from the canal.

An arched portico and surround leads to the grand front entrance. Inside is an original glass panelled door with stained glass and leaded inserts. Reception rooms are welcoming with cornices, high ceilings, deep skirting boards and fireplaces. With a bespoke kitchen to the rear, is a vaulted room, a walk-in pantry and a utility. There is a potential self-contained first floor suite, while four to five light-filled individual bedrooms have added office or study space. A further leisure floor with bedrooms could be private family or guest accommodation.

The well-maintained grounds have private enclosed seating areas.
