Courier proud to join in social media boycott

TO SHOW our support to FC Halifax Town and the wider football community in their stance against online abuse, Courier Sport will be taking part in the social media blackout from 3pm on Friday to 11.59pm on Monday, meaning we will not provide coverage of The Shaymen on Twitter or Facebook during that time.

In recent weeks a number of players, including former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, have quit online platforms, while clubs like Swansea City, Birmingham City and Rangers staged boycotts.

That was in response to a growing trend of racist abuse being directed at footballers on social media, including stars such as Marcus Rashford, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Raheem Sterling. Whether the victim is a Premier League footballer or not, racist abuse is abhorrent, and we are proud to join in this protest against it. We are also taking a stand against abuse of any kind by online trolls, which is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

Our FC Halifax Town writer Tom Scargill will still be covering Town’s games against Stockport and Yeovil from the grounds and there will be the usual live blog, on-the-whistle match report and post-match reaction from Pete Wild on the Courier website.
