Friends join forces to help Peggy the dog

- Tom Scargill

TWO RUNNERS from Calderdale have raised more than £1,000 to help pay for a poorly dog’s treatment after it was run over.

Friends Lindsay Upton and Claire Woodhead ran each date in April in kilometres - 1km on April 1, 15km on April 15 and so on - after hearing about what had happened to one-year-old staffy Peggy at the end of January.

Peggy’s owners had driven out into the country when the dog jumped out of the boot when it was opened upon arrival, and was run over by another car.

Peggy has undergone surgery and has recovered, having fractured one back leg and taken all the skin off the other leaving all the bone exposed

Lindsay, who lives in Siddal, said: “When I go on holiday, my friend looks after my dogs, and Peggy’s owner is her best friend, so when she’s got my dogs they take them all for walks together, so the dogs are friends. So she told me about it, and asked her to ring her to make sure she was OK with me doing it, and she was amazed that I would do it when I’d never met her or the dog.”

Four members of Southowram Running Club initially began the challenge, with Lindsay and Claire completing it, running 252 miles in total in and around locations in Calderdale.

Lindsay said: “They had pet insurance but it only paid out £6,000 and the bill was higher than that. So I thought ‘what can I do?’ and I’d heard about this running challenge anyway.

“You don’t have any time to recover if you get injured, so it was hard. You get achy muscles, sore knees.

“And by the last couple of weeks it takes up a lot of your day because the runs are three hours long. The last seven days alone was around 122 miles, so it takes its toll.

“And you don’t want to do the same route every day and we tried to find routes that weren’t too hilly, but trying to pick anywhere in Halifax that doesn’t have a hill is quite hard!

“But I really enjoyed it. I’d never run further than a half marathon before, so it pushed you to see what you can do if you put your mind to it.”
