Council to get tough on litter tippers

‘Shocking amount of waste’

- Tom Scargill

CALDERDALE COUNCIL say they are determined to tackle rubbish dumping after residents were blighted by a huge pile of garbage on their street.

The Council’s Assistant Director for Neighbourhoods, Andrew Pitts, said: “I’m appalled by the shocking amount of waste which has been dumped at Lightowler Close in Halifax.

“Our community wardens visited the area on Sunday morning, as soon as we became aware of the issue, and described the situation as one of the worst instances of tipped domestic waste they had seen.

“We know how distressing this must be for residents and we’re determined to identify the culprits and do all we can to stop further problems. As part of a thorough investigation, we’re speaking to residents at every property to see if they have any information or eyewitness accounts. We’ll make sure the area is cleared as soon as possible and the waste will be thoroughly sorted to try and locate anything which may identify those responsible.

“We’ll also look at the best options to prevent issues like this in future.”

Meanwhile the owner of Halifax Boxing Club says he is fed-up with litter louts throwing their rubbish on his premises at Ladyship Business Park, Halifax.

Mick Rowe says people have been discarding their rubbish over a wall, down an old railway banking and into the club’s car park, which has had to be cleared up several times.

“We’ve paid for a skip to remove what we can, costing hundreds of pounds, and filled two skips,” said Mr Rowe. “It’s more than just fly tipping. It has become a massive eye sore. We have cleaned the area up for years, making the whole area quite attractive, but lately it’s

become a total disgrace. We are hoping it doesn’t get this bad again its cost the club a great deal of money and brings the area and the club down.”

Mr Pitts added: “As the land is privately owned, it is the responsibility of the landowner to remove the rubbish. However, we do sympathise with the club and would like to help as much as we can. We’re looking into ways we can assist in tackling the problem and will do what we can to help prevent further issues.”
