Local club runners take on massive challenges

STAINLAND LIONS’ Ed Hyland and Stephen Hall set themselves the ambitious target of completing two full laps of the Calderdale Way (a total of 100 hilly miles) in under 24 hours last weekend.

The pair started their stupendous challenge at 6am on Saturday and finished 22 hours and 50 minutes later, having climbed 18,000 feet.

Hyland raised money for St Mary’s Out of School Club Sowerby Bridge, while Hall supported Overgate Hospice & Candleligh­ters.

The pair have raised over £2,500 so far and donations can still be made to their JustGiving.com pages.

It’s Grim Up North hosted their weekend running festival in Bradford.

There were a number of races from 5k to ultra-marathon with all versions entitled The Sir Titus Trot. Stainland’s Chris Bowen ran the 10 mile route, crossing the line in 1:36:27.

■ Also running in the Sir Titus Trot 10 mile were three Northowram Pumas.

Tim Sayer clocked 1:25:32 and he was followed by Sharon Sayer in 1:59:53 and Cath Holmes in 1:59:58.

■ Meanwhile, Queensbury Running Club’s husband and wife team of Terri Mason and Andrew Dovernor both qualified for the ITU World Duathlon Championsh­ips in Australia in 2022.

Terri qualified in the sprint distance at Croft, which consists of a 5k run, 20k bike and 2.5k run and Andrew qualified at Hertfordsh­ire in the standard distance comprising of a 10k run, 40k bike and 5k run.

Both will be competing for Great Britain against age groupers from around the world.

■ Calder Valley Fell Runners’ Lee Shimwell and Dougie Zinis took on the considerab­le challenge of the Paddy Buckley Round one of the country’s ‘Big 3’ fell running rounds.

The challenge, first completed in 1982, is just over 100k in length and includes 29,000 feet of climbing as runners scale 47 of Snowdonia’s peaks.

The pair set off from Llanberis at 9pm on Saturday and Zinis and Shimwell came home well ahead of their target times with Zinis returning to Llanberis in 20:40 and Shimwell not far behind in 22:41.
