United hope to take chance to claim Premier’s top spot

- David Rattigan

WITH HALIFAX League Premier Division leaders Greetland having no game this weekend, Shelf United have the chance to reclaim top spot, providing they avoid defeat at Hebden Royd Red Star.

It won’t be an easy game for Shelf who could be looking to striker Harry Talbot to continue his excellent strike rate to date. Red Star are normally a hard side to break down so this contest could be finely balanced.

A meeting of the bottom two takes place at Sowerby United where St Columbas are the visitors.

The pressure will be on the hosts, with them yet to gain their first point and knowing defeat would see them six points adrift of the visitors.

Calder 76 took over top spot in Division One following their 5-4 win at Flying Dutchman last week. Next up for Rob Kenworthy’s side is a trip to Northowram.

The Rams have also started the season well and a tight game looks on the cards.

Denholme United, level on points with Calder, travel to take on Shelf United Reserves. With the hosts still pointless after three games Denholme will fancy their chances.

Ivy House had a setback in their last outing, at Denholme, and will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they take on Midgley United.

Shelf FC suffered their first defeat of the Division Two season last week when they lost to Warley but still hold a five point advantage over their nearest rivals.

A trip to Calder 76 Reserves could see them back to winning ways.

Warley Rangers have the look of title contenders under the leadership of player manager Ben Attle. They face an undefeated Sowerby United Reserves.

St Columbas Reserves have climbed up to second place following their 5-3 win over Thornton CC last week, in which Adam Knapton netted four goals. They host Sowerby Bridge Reserves, who are sure to give Columbas a real test.

Sowerby Bridge will be hopeful of getting last week’s postponed WR Challenge Cup game with Horsforth St Margaret’s played and make progress in the competition.
