Brods remain top of the league after overcoming big scare from Malton

-

OLD BRODLEIANS remain top of North One East following last Saturday’s 40-32 home victory over Malton and Norton but they were forced to hang on by their gutsy opponents.

Brods dominated the first half from the moment Adam Sutcliffe cut through the stretched Malton defence for the opening try, goaled by Phil Town, after just three minutes play.

Malton responded with a penalty on 12 minutes but three minutes later, Sutcliffe went over for another Townimproved try.

Jimmy Hodkinson set up the position with a dash to the line from close range and Sutcliffe was in support to complete his hat-trick after just 17 minutes.

Malton had a good spell of pressure but the home defence held firm and Brods found the response when Rob Jennings picked up to score the bonus point try, goaled by Town to make it 26-3.

The visitors again tried to respond and were rewarded with another penalty but the final say of the half went to the hosts when Jennings touched-down again. Town converting to put his team 33-6 up at the interval.

Malton came out for the second half in determined fashion and it didn’t take long for them to register their first try.

The Woodhead boys responded and Dom Georgiou broke forward and found support from Dodd before Jimmy Hodkinson raced away to score, Town adding the extras.

Brods looked in complete control but the visitors weren’t finished. Handling errors crept into the Brods game and from a Malton scrum, the ball was kicked through for Paul Angus to score. James Bulmer added a fine touchline conversion.

Malton’s Bulmer intercepted and raced clear to score a selfconverted try that made it 4025. Malton were now in search of a bonus point try and with some good positional kicking they forced Brods back.

The hosts went a man down with Hanson receiving a yellow card and the visitors turned the screw when Sam Triffitt crossed the whitewash. Bulmer’s conversion cut the deficit to eight with as many minutes remaining.

However, the Brods defence held out for the remaining minutes.

Brods seconds enjoyed a fine victory at Rishworthians while the Beavers registered an impressive 70-0 home win over Bramley.
