Three quickfire signings in a busy week at Halifax Panthers

-

Halifax Panthers have completed a hat-trick of signings in the last week.

First to put pen to paper was 26-year-old half-back Cory Aston, signing a two year deal.

Aston has Super League credentials with Castleford Tigers and Championship experience with Sheffield Eagles, Bradford Bulls, Featherstone Rovers and most recently London Broncos.

“I’m delighted to be a Panther for at least the next two years,” said Aston. “Halifax is a big club with a big fan base and I can’t wait to pull on the blue and white jersey.”

Matty Gee has made the switch to Halifax from Leigh Centurions for the 2022 season.

The 26-year-old enjoyed spells with Hull Kingston Rovers and London Broncos.

He began his career with Salford before making the move to the capital, where he tasted promotion following a dramatic victory over Toronto Wolfpack in the 2018 Million Pound Game.

Predominantly a back rower with the added ability to play in the middle, Gee gives Panthers head coach Simon Grix some versatility as well as hard running attack and big hitting in defence.

And making the move to his home town is Liam Whitton, who progressed through the ranks at Siddal ARLFC, before joining the Leeds Rhinos academy. The young full-back was a prolific try-scorer during his academy days, crossing for a crucial score to help the Rhinos secure the Academy Grand Final

and regularly crossing the whitewash during the regular season.

He spent time on loan at their dual registration partner club Featherstone Rovers, where Whitton eventually signed a permanent deal.

However, with chances there limited, the 20-year-old decided returned to the community game.
