Wild ‘gutted’ after Shaymen lose to last-gasp Wrexham goal

-

TOWN BOSS Pete Wild said his side dominated the game from start to finish after Halifax’s 2-1 defeat to Wrexham at The Shay.

Jordan Slew gave Town the lead but Wrexham fought back thanks to James Jones and Paul Mullin, with the winner coming in added time moments after Elliot Newby had hit the post.

“We’ve dominated the game from start to finish, with and without the ball, we’ve made them look distinctly average, with all the money and all the clout they’ve got, and we’ve basically ran them off the park,” said

Wild. “I’m really gutted for the players because they deserve more than that.

“Somehow they’ve had two shots at goal and scored two goals, but obviously when they’re paying silly money for centre-forwards then that’s what it gets you, which is ludicrous but it is what it is.”

Town created the better chances but couldn’t score the crucial second goal when they were on top.

“We could have taken more chances and then at the end we’re trying to win it when we hit the post and they break on us, we’re trying to win the game because that’s what we are, we’re a team that wants to win football matches,” Wild said.

“They’ve hit us on the break at the end which is disappointing, but all in all, as a football club, as fans, as staff, as players, we should be proud of what the club’s produced on the pitch.”

Billy Waters’ brace and a goal from Kieran Green saw Town win 3-1 at Dover last Saturday, but it wasn’t an easy task against a spirited home side.

“I thought they (Dover) played really well, they made it tough for us and tried to negate what we’re good at. At times they did that,” Wild said.

“I thought we started well, first 20 minutes we were at them, got the good early goal, and then we sat off a little bit and let them grow into the game.”

Wild added: “We started going forward too quickly, we spoke at half-time about keeping the ball more and building more through the thirds, and we tried to do that better second-half, our distances between the lines were better and gave us more of a chance to control the game.”

But Wild felt his team got the result they deserved.

“We’ve had how many chances on the break and set-pieces, we’ve had numerous opportunities, but they’ve had some good opportunities as well, and they’ve given us a really good going over,” he said.

“We’ve had a week off and we’re always not great after a week off, so to come back and get that sort of game under our belts, we’re all really pleased.”
