Prime Minister scraps Covid rules but caution is still urged
CALDERDALE COUNCIL’S Director for Public Health is urging that people remain cautious on the day the remaining Covid restrictions in England are lifted.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the scrapping of the legal requirement to isolate after a positive Covid test, and the ending of universal free testing in England, emphasising the need for people to take “personal responsibility” when it comes to tackling the virus.
Calderdale Council’s Debs Harkins said: “I would encourage everyone to remain aware of the risks of COVID, be kind and help each other to stay as safe as

possible
“It’s also important to remember that COVID has not gone away completely. The next phase of the pandemic will require a careful balancing act and we’re reviewing what ‘living with COVID’ means for people in Calderdale.
“Thankfully we’ve seen a steady reduction in our case rate and it’s currently around 340 per 100,000. This is really positive, especially as we’ve also seen a reduction in hospitalisations. However, with no legal restrictions in place there are uncertainties about the next phase of the pandemic. It’s important
we continue to make sensible choices to prevent widespread transmission and be considerate to those who are the most vulnerable.
“The most important thing we can all do is have both doses of the COVID vaccine as well as any boosters. We can still wear masks in places where there
may be vulnerable people and keep our distance from others out of kindness to others.”
Simon Jackson, owner f the Acapulco nightclub in Halifax, said: “With all COVID-19 restriction due to be removed today, we have upgraded our air conditioning system to protect those that may still be vulnerable
or feel uneased. We have also implemented ‘Ozone Cleaning’ since late 2021, which kills all viruses and bacteria within the club premises, running while we are closed. During the warmer months we were encouraging people to make use of our roof space, and have done during the winter by installing
a marquee. It will be nice to see the night-time economy getting back to normal.”
