Thursday’s triples all set to produce close finish

THE THURSDAY Evening Triples at Halifax Bowling Club’s Spring League is developing into a most exciting climax.

Leaders Arriva (Les Holmes, Finley Hickey, Graham Wilson) played out a top of the table clash against second-placed SID (John Sharp, Steve Swallow, Ian Ryding) and it was the latter who took the honours 16-15.

Third-placed True Grit (Steve Rathmell, Chris Rhodes, Tony James) came unstuck against strugglers Madlams (Gordon Bradford, Derek Smith, Mick Walker), losing 19-13.

Former champions Clayton (Tony Riley, Mel Fielding, John Williams) took on Little and Large (Steve Rothwell, Ian Smith, David Laycock) and they drew 12-12.

Two of the bottom teams in the Friday Evening Pairs, Dubliners (David Armitage, John Holden) and Gary and Pat (Sandra Cooper, Pat Grant) both registered wins in the latest round of fixtures.

Dubliners beat league leaders Blue Woods (Gordon Bradford, Andy Balmford) 11-9 and Gary and Pat beat the much improved Sisters (Val Bax, Del Haigh) 17-5.

In the Monday Afternoon Fours, Rascals (Sandra Cooper, Derek Squires, Steve Webster, David Laycock) lost 24-5 to Well Bowled (Brian Winrow, Doug Hamilton, Steve Dunwell, Nick Blackburn).

In an important fixture in the Wednesday Evening Fours, the second and third place teams went head-tohead when Saxons (David Armitage, John Holden, Steve Webster, David Laycock) edged Gapp (Danny Leather, Sandra Cooper, Pat Grant, Pete Grant) 15-14.

Wednesday Fours Division One leaders Northern Lights (Les Holmes, Steve Rothwell, John Beverley, Mick Walker) were given a scare by Hard Liners (Keith Owens, Chris Rhodes, Joe Phillips, Tony James) as they battled to a 10-6 win.

Black Cats (Gordon Bradford, Andy Balmforth, John Sharp, Brian Winrow) prevailed against Jack High (Carol Onions, Marilyn Greenwood, Terry O’Brien, David Onions) 16-13.

Halifax Bowling Club will be running a crown green how to bowl session on Tuesday mornings (10.30am to noon) from April 5.
