Historic Hall property in stunning parkland

- Sally Burton sally.burton@jpimedia.co.uk @HxCourier

A UNIQUE Jacobean Grade One Listed home is for sale within the historic Kirklees Hall grounds, close to the medieval site where the fabled Robin Hood is reputed to have died, and was then laid to rest.

Forming one of the oldest parts of the estate, this threebedroom stone-built home is set within 18 acres or so of grassy parkland.

Within its walls, stone fireplaces, mullion windows, and old beams hark back to years gone by, and twin stone pillars stand tall in the living room with its full height windows.

But modern comforts are plentiful too. An open plan kitchen is one of them - fitted with solid wood units and a range cooker, with a separate utility room.

There’s a split level dining area, and a bespoke timber turned staircase leads to a vaulted landing with balustrade.

With the three sizeable bedrooms is a house bathroom with a suite that includes both bath and shower.

The master bedroom with its own en suite shower room has a stone fire-place, and a dressing area.

Electric security gates give entry to the grounds, with trees lining the long driveway to the property and front parking spaces.

With the formal and vegetable gardens surrounding the buildings is extensive parkland and woodland, with lovely views in every direction.

The history of the estate goes right back to the twelfth century when the Cistercians built Kirklees Priory.

The Priory is said to have been outlaw Robin Hood’s final resting place.

Legend has it that Robin Hood was dying in the priory when he fired an arrow from his bed and asked to be buried where it landed.

The site of his grave is marked on the local Ordnance Survey map and is open to visitors once a year, but only as part of a guided tour.

The Hall was the seat of the Armytage family for several generations until the late Lady Armytage sold the property on in 1983. It was renovated and assisted by English Heritage.

The agent advises that the property is leasehold with approximately 979 years remaining, and a service charge of £2,200 per annum, to include upkeep of the grounds and communal areas.

This character home, Kirklees Hall, Clifton, Brighouse, is currently for sale priced £500,000 with Applegate Properties.

Call the estate agent on 01484 682999 for further information.
