Close contest sees leaders Pals pipped by Focus

ONE OF the best performanc­es in Halifax Bowling Club’s Spring League was in Division Two of the Wednesday Fours, when runaway leaders Pals (Sandra Cooper, Bea Grant, Pat Grant, Peter Krenc) came up against a determined Focus (Alan Singleton, Eleanor Carney. John Crewson, Chris Lindsey).

In a nip and tuck encounter Focus took the honours by 12 shots to 11. Pals lead the division, while Focus are joint second place with Yorkies (Pauline Ward, Sylvia Allott, Rose O’Leary, Jack Pickles) who beat Guys & Dolls (Eileen Dovernor, Ron Bax, Donald Rawson, Jeff Dovernor) by 18 shots to 10.

In the other game in Division 2, Springers (Hazel Garside, Kath Taliku, Avril Humberston­e, Maywyyne Denby) proved too strong for Fair of Face (Bronwyn Bannon, Geoff Harrison, Lynda Canning, Maurice Thorpe) as they ran out 16-9 winners.

New team The Martins (Clive and Ann Martin) in Division 2 of the Tuesday Evening Pairs gained their first point in competitiv­e indoor bowling as they drew 6-6 with Double D. (Stuart Gill, David McMahon).

The game between the top two in the division featured Champions elect Stray Cats (Gordon Bradford, Andy Balmforth) and Eagles (Bea Grant, Martin Forster).

In a closely fought encounter Stray Cats retained their unbeaten record as they ran out narrow 7-6 winners. Stray Cats will be playing in Division One next season which commences in Seprember.

New ladies team “L” Plates (Irene Sweetman, Ann Martin, Lorraine Boulton) registered their second win in Division 2 of the Friday Triples as they beat Larks (Gary Plane, Chris Dunwell, Steve Dunwell) by 20 shots to 13. Gary and Pat (Sandra Cooper, Gary Robinson) turned in one of the performanc­es of the season as they came from 12-2 down to beat the Autumn champions in the Friday Pairs Clayton (Tony Riley, Paul Gill) by 26-12.

Halifax Bowling Club will be running a crown green bowling session ‘Learn how to bowl’ on a Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon, starting on April 5.
