Clubs fight for honours in Snails’ own Flat Caps race

SOWERBY BRIDGE Snails hosted the fourth instalment of the popular Flat Caps 10k last Sunday and the event attracted a field of 224 runners.

The men’s record was broken by Jamie Fradgley who clocked 38:30, ahead of Sale Harriers’ Robert Fairbanks (40:42) and Todmorden Harrier Ben Blosse (40:46).

The first woman home was the Snails’ own Sam Carter with an impressive time of 50:13, followed by Stacey Cleal (Queensbury RC) and Helen Armitage (Stainland Lions) who finished in 51:16 and 52:06 respective­ly.

The ‘Pure Determinat­ion Award’ was handed out to Snails’ Emma Suttle, who crossed the finish line in 1:40:36, an excellent time considerin­g the difficult course.

The run also raised £2365.59 for The Christie, a Manchester­based charity and the leading experts in cancer care, research and education.

Three Halifax Harriers took part in the event and they were led home by Gareth Burrell (44:21) in 11th overall. Paul Hopkinson and Chris Burrell recorded times of 53:57 and 59:56 respective­ly.

The Flat Caps 10k was the sixth race in the Stainland Lions’ Championsh­ip calendar.

Age group successes came from Helen Armitage 1st FV55, Jackie Barker 1st FV65, Judith Greenwood 1st FV75, Michelle Rogerson 2nd FV45, Jan King 2nd MV70, Virginia Lewin 2nd FV65, Martin O’Brien 3rd MV60, Clare Thomas 3rd FSen, and Hayley Kelly 3rd FV50.

Halifax Harriers’ Max Wharton ran the fastest time at any parkrun in the country on Saturday, clocking 15:03 at Bushy Park in southwest London, the birthplace of parkrun.

Erawan Wanithanon­t finished sixth in Sunday’s Big Flat Runway Half Marathon at Elvington near York. Erawan ran a personal best 1:25:34 and was first in his age group (M40).

Wayne Stevens completed the course in 1:53:22. John Moore ran the 10k event at the same venue, finishing in 57:43.

Will Carver ran the Leamington Spa 10k in 40:27 to finish 49th in a field of more than 1,300 runners.

Aileen Baldwin celebrated a women’s V70 record of 24:48.

The Wardle Skyline Fell Race, at seven-miles long with 1,250 feet of ascent, is the sixth event in the Lions’ Club Fell Racing Championsh­ip. Rikki Hammond

and Aileen Baldwin came away from the winners enclosure with bottles of wine while Andrew Earnshaw was first Lion back.
