A MAN is due to face trial accused of killing a Halifax couple in their 90s by driving dangerously.
Uzain Isa, 23, has been charged with causing the death of Eric Walsh, 93, and his wife Marion, 90.
The pensioners’ Skoda Octavia collided with a Kia Rio vehcile near the Kirklees/Calderdale boundary, in 2019 as they returned from their weekly shopping trip and cafe visit.
Isa, of Harvest Court, Halifax, appeared before magistrates charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
He was given unconditional bail and is due to appear before
Leeds Crown Court on Thursday May 5.
The crash happened on Halifax Road on February 4, 2019, near the Stafford Arms pub in Scholes near Cleckheaton,
The road was closed for several hours and emergency personel from the police, ambulance service and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended.
The couple lived together on Kenilworth Drive in Lightcliffe and had been married for more than seven decades.
Mr and Mrs Walsh’ neighbour, former Mayor of Calderdale Graham Reason, speaking at the time of the tragedy, said: “They were a private couple, and clearly devoted to one another
“They were pleasant neighbours, not intrusive. They were the sort of neighbours anyone would be pleased to have.
“Eric liked to potter around in his garden. But you never saw one of them without the other, they were always together.
“It was devastating when we found out about it. They were a lovely couple.”
Mr Reason’s wife Rita, who has lived on the same street as the couple for around 40 years, added: “They kept themselves to themselves, and stayed in a lot.
“They’d just popped out for a drive around, a bit of shopping and to go to the cafe.”
They were the sort of neighbours anyone would be pleased to have.
