Hyland leads Valley’s challenge in Horseshoe

Ed Hyland finished in a fine 11th place as he led the Calder Valley Fell Runners’ charge in the Coledale Horseshoe race last week.

A contingent of 16 runners from the club lined up to take on the challengin­g Lake District race, which covers 8.5 miles and includes 3,000 feet of climbing.

Hyland was the fastest Valley runner with a time of 1:20:18 seeing him knocking on the door of the top ten finishers overall and securing 10th place in his age category.

Lee Shimwell and Phil Wells also had excellent races, each claiming ninth place in their respective categories.

Christine Turner led Valley’s women on the day, completing the race in a time of 2:17:08 and securing 12th place in her age category.

Several club runners made the trip to Horwich, near Bolton,

to take on the Rivington Pike Centenary Fell Race.

At 3.2 miles, it is a relatively short but hard race that dashes up to Rivington Pike and back, cramming 800 feet of ascent into its short course.

An impressive time of 18:59 saw Matt Roberts claim eighth place overall in a field of 396 runners. Shaun Godsman was only 90 seconds behind and finished 20th overall.

Stella Chrisantho­u, Helen Buchan, Virgil Barton, Stephen Smithies, Rod Sutcliffe and Andy Ford made up the rest of the club’s team.

There was a great turnout for the Pendle Mountain Rescue Dark Dash. Andy Ford excelled in the night race and his time of 46:11 secured third place in the overall race and top spot in his age category.

Francis Woof (65:13) was sixth in his age category.
