Volvo workmates ready to hit the fundraising trail

- Shirley Bartynek

Volvo Truck and Bus Centre workmates based in Hamilton are planning to trek the West Highland Way in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Team XTREK will start on June 8 and hope to finish the gruelling West Highland Way trek in only five days in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Those taking part include: Andy Johnston, Brian Beattie, Scott Mcewan, Stephen Tiffney, Martin Mcdowell, Billy Lang, Steven Fisher, and Dale Mccaskie.

The West Highland Way is a 96-mile long distance footpath across Scotland, running from Milngavie north of Glasgow to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, with an element of hill walking on the route.

The Way is commonly walked in seven to eight days, although the Volvo XTREK team have challenged themselves to complete it in only five days.

Andy Johnston said: “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer; friends, family or colleagues and we want to make a difference and contribute in our own way to help cure cancer.

“We all agreed to walk this challenging trek and have been training for months, walking in all sorts of weather to build our stamina and get used to the distances we need to walk every day of the five days – a lot! It’s rough ground and not easy but we’re determined to do this as a team and stay together all the way along the West Highland Way!”

Rowan Main, local fundraising manager, Cancer Research UK said: “Andy and all the guys have impressed me with their determination for this challenge and have trained in some really awful weather, braving blisters and torrential rain! They deserve our support for this demanding physical fundraising challenge.”
