Porterswell raids follow residents’complaints

Police seized booze while on patrol in the Porterswell area of Uddingston at the weekend.

Officers have been targeting the area following complaints by nearby residents that teenage yobs have regularly been causing disturbances in the area.

Youths aged 13 and 18 had been using the wooded areas to drink, with Friday and Saturday nights being the noisiest.

According to residents wheelie bins were also being stolen from homes and taken to Porterswell to be set alight.

In recent weeks officers have seized “large quantities” of alcohol in the area, along with class A drugs.

Police told the Advertiser this week that patrols in Porterswell last Friday and Saturday night recovered a total of 14 cans of cider, two litres of cider and two bottles of Buckfast.

Inspector Derek Hamilton said this week letters had been sent out to parents of youths found in the area.

He said: “There were no calls to police this weekend about Porterswell. However, we were carrying out patrols in the area and again recovered alcohol.

“We will continue to provide additional patrols in this area.

“We consider the safety of young people to be a priority but we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour in this area.”

Last month residents in the adjacent Knowehead area of Uddingston said they had been putting up with the problem for too long.

One estimated that up to 30 youths gathered at Porterswell on some occasions.

As well as causing noise in Porterswell itself, disturbances also took place as the youths walked through neighbouring Knowehead, residents pointed out.

Anyone with information about problems in Porterswell can contact police on 101.
