Survivor is all set to walk the walk

Janice is raising cash to say thank you to charity

A Blantyre breast cancer survivor is celebrating her 60th birthday by taking part in the Edinburgh Moonwalk event.

Janice Straiton was diagnosed with the disease 15 years ago at the age of 45 and spent 10 months receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

She then underwent intensive surgery before receiving the all clear five years later in 2006.

And now her plan for her 60th birthday is to walk the 13mile overnight route with her daughter Julie and daughterin-law Kirsteen in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

Janice explained: “I have challenged myself on celebrating my 60th birthday to join others to raise as much as we can for breast cancer, a charity close to my heart.

“It is 15 years since I was diagnosed with this terrible disease but I am so proud to be walking the streets of Edinburgh on Saturday coming (June 11) along with my daughter and daughter-in-law.”

Janice, of Abernethy Avenue, Westcraigs, decided to take up the challenge after enjoying walks with her dog Monty and building up her fitness levels, after being forced to give up her work at the time following diagnosis.

She added: “I struggled for a long time after surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and Breast Cancer Care were there for me through everything.

“With this in mind I thought it would be quite nice to raise some cash for the charity as a little thank you from me and my family.

“Everyone knows someone who has had some sort of a relationship with breast cancer, so let’s help others.”

Janice is hoping to raise £100 for the charity and anyone wishing to help her reach her goal can do so by visiting her fundraising page at https:// moonwalkscotland2016. everydayhero.com/uk/janice-5
