Rethink required at Muir Street Lidl entrance
Dear Editor
After the shambles of Peacock Cross one might have thought that driving in Hamilton couldn’t get any worse, but with the new traffic management at Lidl this has proved to be a fond hope.
The central reservation must be reinstalled.
Traffic travelling up Muir Street would have to access Lidl via the roundabout at Almada Street.
Traffic exiting Lidl would have to turn left and complete the journey via the roundabout at the museum or Lower Auchingramont Road.
The necessity of a pedestrian crossing at this point must also be questioned.
The virtually redundant traffic restrictions on Cadzow Street leading to Castle Street should be removed and this would take some of the pressure off Muir Street.
Since the restrictions are enforced by the police they are regularly ignored as the chances of being “caught” are remote.
We are assured by Gordon Mackay that “work will be completed shortly to link together all the Muir Street signals and this will allow improved progression along the corridor.”
One might ask why this was not in place for the opening of Lidl.
After all the store did not spring up overnight.
We should also remember that we were assured when the ‘SCOOT’ system of traffic management at Peacock Cross was finely tuned we would see an improvement in traffic flow.
