Lanarkshir­e’s housing divide

Homes cost more in south of county

The average house costs almost £15,000 more in South Lanarkshir­e than in neighbouri­ng North Lanarkshir­e.

New official figures reveal the extent of the housing divide across the county.

The most recent statistics, for April 2016, reveal the average house in South Lanarkshir­e costs £112,404.

That is a 1.7 per cent rise on the previous year when the figure was £110,520.

In North Lanarkshir­e, the average house price for April 2016 was £97,528.

And that is a four per cent rise on the previous year when the price was £93,793.

Both North and South Lanarkshir­e lag behind the average Scotland-wide house price, which is £138,445 – a rise of 3.3 per cent on the previous year’s figure of £134,030.

The government figures were released by Registers of Scotland as part of their involvemen­t in the new UK House Price Index, which was published for the first time last week and will be published every month.

And the latest monthly figures for sales volume show there were 350 sales in South Lanarkshir­e, compared to 311 in North Lanarkshir­e.

There were 5507 sales Scotland.

The report also revealed that the average price for a new build property across in Scotland is £188,627, an increase of 6.8 per cent on the previous year, while the average price for an existing resold property is £136,335, an increase of 3.1 per cent on the previous year.

The average price for a property purchased by a former owner occupier is £165,349, an increase of 4.8 per cent on the previous year.

The average price for property purchased by a first time buyer is £112,374, an increase of 1.6 per cent on the previous year.

The average price for a cash sale is £127,180, an increase of 2.1 per cent on the previous year, while the average price for property purchased with a mortgage is £143,667, also an increase of 3.8 per cent on the previous year.
