Visitor from homeless unit helps kids’ learning

School forms links with Blue Triangle unit thanks to Logan

- Leona Greenan

The P3/4 class from St Elizabeth’s Primary invited a young person from Hamilton’s Blue Triangle homeless unit to visit them.

It came about after the youngsters read David Walliams’ hit novel Mr Stink – a tale about a smelly, despised homeless person.

And in order to dispel such stereotypes of homeless people, the children were keen to meet someone in a similar situation.

The pupils were delighted then when a “very mannerly, eloquent and trendy young person” called Logan visited with his support worker.

They asked plenty of questions and were thrilled to hear about Logan’s passion for building BMX bikes, before learning that living in the Blue Triangle helped people better their lives.

Principal teacher Christine Emmett said: “The children themselves quickly and genuinely dismissed any comparisons between a genuine homeless person and the character Mr Stink.

“Logan is a friendly young man who helps out at BMX parks and who is y helping the Blue Triangle Unit create and maintain an outside organic garden.

“The children saw for themselves that many homeless people are trying to build a positive future for themselves using The Blue Triangle as a base.

“Since the visit, the school and the Blue Triangle have struck up a firm friendship and pledged to work together in art projects, reciprocal visits and if needed, in the collection of food parcels for the unit. Like my pupils and through this relationship with the unit, I am now more aware and respectful of the presence of and need for such a service in my community, of its value and of the many ways in which it can mutually benefit the area.”
