Autoglass site flats plan wins approval

Council backs proposal for two new blocks

- Alastair Mcneill

Plans for 12 flats on the site of the Autoglass premises off Bothwell’s Bellshill Road were approved this week.

The existing Autoglass building is to be demolished to make way for two two-storey blocks, parking, amenity space and landscaping.

South Lanarkshire Council executive director (community and enterprise resources) Michael Mcglynn said the proposal – submitted by Belfron UK Ltd trading as Autoglass and Laddaw – had no adverse impact on residential or visual amenity and raised no safety concerns.

He pointed out in a document put before councillors that roads and transportation had no objections, subject to standard conditions relating to parking, turning area and surface water trapping.

Mr Mcglynn added: “The existing footway fronting the development should be extended over the width of the access junction and fully resurfaced.

“A dropped kerb footway crossing should be installed to access the development.

“In addition any connections for services within the public road/ verge will require an application for a road opening permit.”

Only one letter of objection was submitted in connection with the proposal, expressing concern about the positioning of the bin sheds for the 12 flats.

The objector, however, described the proposal as “a sympathetic planning application which should enhance the area”.

Mr Mcglynn said: “The bins will be kept within a bin enclosure and the store closest to 15 Clydevale will be located adjacent to an existing high boundary wall, thereby reducing its presence in conjunction with the proposed planting.

“The bin enclosures will be similar in nature and scale to other bin stores at modern flatted developments. It is therefore unlikely that odours, litter or vermin will result.”
