Hundreds of people are expected to flock to the annual Blantyre Old Parish Church summer fair this Saturday (June 25) .

The event will again take place in the church hall and grounds, with former Scotland, Hearts and Partick Thistle goalkeeper Alan Rough opening the event at 2pm. The former football star will also crown proud Blantyre Gala Queen Ona Mcdonagh (7) a pupil at St Joseph’s Primary School, assisted by her attendants Olive Todd and Millie Mcdade.

Those in attendance will enjoy a host of activities and stalls including balloons, sweet cones, vinyl wall art and canvasses, face painting, cake and candy, a bottle stall, bouncy castle, home baking, tug-of-war, tea room, games, bric-a-brac, burgers and much more.

The pipe band will also be in attendance.

Scotland and Partick Thistle Hall of Famer Alan Rough, who is a renowned after dinner speaker and radio broadcaster, said: “I’m delighted to be invited along to the Blantyre Old Parish Church summer fair.

“Hopefully the sun will shine for the queen and crowds on Saturday.”

Church spokesman Billy Gallacher, of the gala committee, expects this year’s event to be bigger and better than ever before.

He said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming Alan Rough to the church and Blantyre this weekend.

“We think he’s a huge attraction and will be a big hit with the public, in particular Blantyre’s football fans, who will be delighted to meet a Scotland legend.

“A huge thank you to our usual sponsors this year once again, including Lanarkshire businessman Mr James Mortimer, and to everyone who has helped organise the event.

“Now, let’s just hope the sun shines brightly for a fabulous family day out.”

Donations for the bottle stall, homebaking and toys (no soft toys) can be handed into the church on Saturday morning after 11am.

Admission is £1, although under 12s are free.
