Ali was a beacon of hope for the downtrodden

- By Reverend Donald Lawrie, Minister at South Church and Quarter Parish Church

In 2016 we have heard of a number of celebrities, whose time in this world is over. Most recently was the passing of Muhammad Ali, a boxing legend who brought his own charisma and special talent, exhibiting physicality, power and some would say beauty, that daunted many before they even reached the boxing ring.

His “in your face” approach to his opponents belied that behind the scene Ali did much to promote unity rather than disharmony.

Evident at his extravagant multifaith memorial service was how much he valued harmony rather than discrimination.

Ali was a towering social and political figure who stood as a beacon of hope for outcast and downtrodden people the world over.

Some say that he embodied a principle “unless you have a very good reason for killing people, war is wrong”.

As human beings we have an all too easy capacity for war but thank God there are those who call us to another way. Jesus himself said “my peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, I do not give to you as the world gives, do not let your hearts be troubled, do not let them be afraid”.

We all need inspiration from time to time and the way of God is the way of peace. Ali may have stung like a bee in the ring but this man of paradox did much to encourage the touch of a butterfly. May we all have a restful and peaceful summer!
