A Hamilton school’s end-of-term service descended into turmoil on Tuesday after a toddler fell from the church balcony.

Shocked school kids and guests who were attending the leaving service for Woodside Primary School’s primary sevens were distressed to find a twoyear-old girl had plunged around 15ft from the balcony of St John’s Church in the town.

The whole school were in attendance, including parents of those attending the service.

It is understood a parent sitting downstairs rushed to the tot’s aid at around 11am.

Ambulance crews arrived at the church and took the youngster to hospital for treatment.

A parent attending the service said: “The children from the school were quite close to the incident and got a fright. One of the parents, who was downstairs, rushed to help the child and two ambulances arrived.”

Both the school and the church this week wished the tot, who is understood to have suffered minor injuries from the fall, a speedy recovery.

Jim Gilhooly, executive director of the South Lanarkshire Council’s Education Resources, said: “The school and council are of course aware of this and our thoughts and best wishes go to the child and family, who must have been severely shaken by this incident. We wish them well.”

Reverend Joanne Hood, minister at St John’s Church in Hamilton, was conducting the service said: “Our thoughts at St John’s are with the little girl and her family and we wish her a speedy recovery.

“I’m also thinking of the school staff, pupils and the wider community who were attending this morning’s service. I’m sure they will also be sharing our concern for the family.”
