Terror at M&D’S

Teen flew out seat as carriage plunged 30ft on to kiddie cars

- Kirsten Mcstay

A Larkhall teenager was among the 10 people injured when a carriage on the Tsunami ride flew off the rails at 40mph.

William Murray (19) suffered serious injuries after he flew out his seat during the crash and was rushed to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary for treatment.

The teenager was enjoying a day out at the theme park with his Hamilton girlfriend Katie Mcardle (17), when disaster struck.

And their carriage on the rollercoaster plunged 30ft on to a children’s ride below.

Katie was trapped upside down on the ride and was panicking as William was no longer in his seat.

Ms Mcardle says she “feels lucky to be alive” and is suffering flashbacks of William ‘flying’ out of his seat as stranded riders around them screamed in terror.

William suffered a dislocated knee, severe bruising and was knocked out in the impact after he was catapulted more than 40ft out of his seat and on to the concrete below.

Mr Murray took to Facebook to thank everyone for their well wishes and that he was making a ‘very slow’ recovery.

William’s dad Graeme said this week told our sister paper the Daily Record that his son is still in shock.

He said: “The shock of it all has hit him now. We can’t believe how lucky he’s been.”

He said: “He has bruising around his neck, maybe from the chair. Something has snapped away or given way for him to have come out and landed like that.”

Graeme also said that the young couple have some unanswered questions as to why the incident happened in the first place.

He said: “I’m so angry that people have been seriously hurt, whether it’s down to a mechanical fault or lack of maintenance, I don’t know.”

Police Scotland officers working on the investigation into the incident at M&D’S have set up a dedicated email address which the public can send images/ footage into.

They continue to appeal to anyone who was in the park during the time of the incident and who may have footage or images, either on mobile phones or cameras, to send them directly to the dedicated inbox.

The email address is rollercoaster@scotland.pnn. police.uk.

I haven’t stopped thinking about a young boy I tried to help
