Gala day smiles

- Stratton Williams

Ferniegair gala day has been enjoying success for 41 years – and 2016 has been no exception.

The community event was well attended again this year by residents, both new and old.

The gala committee would like to thank everyone who turned up this year to support the fun day.

“But a special thanks goes to snooker champion Graeme Dott and his wife Elaine for opening the event,” said gala spokesman Jim Meikle.

Councillors Davie Mclachlan, Stephanie Callaghan and MSP Christina Mckelvie also turned out to lend their continued support.

Also helping to ensure everything went to plan were South Lanarkshire Council ground works, Police Scotland, St John’s Ambulance, retailers and stall holders who all made a contribution to the day.

Bellshill Britannia Accordion Band, the DJS, Diane’s School of Dance and the ride providers entertained the crowd throughout the day.

The gala committee would also like to extend their gratitude to all of the local residents and businesses who donated home baking, raffles and tombola prizes.

“Without them all, the event would not be possible,” added Mr Meikle.

“With council funding cuts and an ever-expanding village, it is becoming more challenging year-on-year to co-ordinate and fund the event.

“Hence, the committee are looking for more local residents to lend a hand to promote the event or to become a gala committee member.”

Local residents can find details of forthcoming fundraisers on signposts throughout the village or by liking ‘Ferniegair Gala Day’ on Facebook.

“These fundraising events, together with small community grants are the only means by which funds are raised and without funds the gala day cannot go ahead,” said Mr Meikle.

Therefore, the committee would like to thank everyone who comes along to support the numerous fundraising events held in Ferniegair community hall. If anyone is interested in sponsoring the gala day, joining the gala committee or lending a hand in any way, please call Betty Smith on 01698 309369.
