Latest rock and pop gig was strum-thing else

New term about to start

- Robert Mitchell

These youngsters who rehearse in Trinity Church have strumthing to shout about after their latest concert.

The guitar heroes from the Lanarkshire Guitar and Mandolin Association (LGMA) rocked out in front of an audience of family and friends at the group’s annual youth concert.

And the students from rock and pop classes played a set of music to a great turnout of parents, families and friends.

The association’s Calum Harbison said: “The three rock and pop classes each played a set of music. The music played included material by Ed Sheeran, Green Day, James Bay, The Vaccines, Velvet Revolver and more.

“All of the young people were given lots of encouragement by their audience.

“In addition there were solo items by Nathan Petrie and Shannon Millar, and an Oasis duet by Nathan Petrie and Jamie Bowman.”

The LGMA will be starting a new term after the summer holidays, to be held on Thursday evenings in Trinity Parish Church. Classes will begin on Thursday, September 1, and will run for a term of 12 weeks. The classes are for young people aged around 11 to 17 from anywhere in the Hamilton area and beyond. This session there will be a class for beginners, one for intermediate and one for advanced players.

Calum added: “The young people will learn pop and rock music ranging from new bands and artists to older classic rock acts.”

There are some places in each of the classes, and anyone interested or needing more information should contact Calum on 01475 721048 or 07847 250529. Alternatively, you can email rock@mandolinscotland. org. Participants should have their own guitar (acoustic or electric), but all the learning materials will be provided.

The Lanarkshire Guitar & Mandolin Association is a voluntary organisation and has been running a range of music groups and activities since 1999.
