The family of a popular Blantyre man killed in a tragic incident have donated more than £1200 to The Salvation Army in his memory.
Marcus Whitelaw (28) was killed by a train at Cambuslang Station in May.
His loved ones wanted something positive to come from the tragedy and asked those who knew him to dig deep for William Hunter House Lifehouse, which helps break the cycle of homelessness and reintegrates people back into the community.
The money will be used to fund activities for residents at the Glasgow centre – something that Marcus, a former Calderside Academy pupil, would have been proud of, say his parents Tommy and Maureen.
During a visit to William Hunter House, an emotional Tommy met staff and residents and witnessed the work being done to help men and women overcome the challenges of homelessness.
He said: “Marcus had such a big heart and he would be so pleased that the money raised was going to help young men and women in need of a hand up.
“We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the Blantyre community, and those further afield for their kind support and thoughts.
“A special mention also goes to David and his colleagues of Young’s Funeral Services who are extremely professional and compassionate with an unbelievable attention to detail.” Ron Senior, manager at William Hunter House, welcomed the donation and said that it would enable staff to run activities and outings for residents that they might not normally get the opportunity to enjoy.
He said: “We are honoured that Marcus’s family have chosen to support The Salvation Army and our work with homeless men and women.
“The money will go to our residents’ activities committee and our activities budget and the plan is to do something for the residents that we’ve never had the chance to do before.
“It was lovely to meet Tommy and show him around the centre.
“From what I have heard about Marcus, he was an incredible person and someone who will be sorely missed by his family and friends.”
