LEFT FOR DEAD BY MURDER BID PAIR

Victim trapped under car

- Court reporter

Two Larkhall thugs are behind bars for their role in a brutal Christmas Eve attempted murder.

Their gang ran a man over with two cars, leaving him trapped under one of the vehicles.

Danny Mccallum and James Docherty are facing lengthy jail terms for being part of a mob which set upon John Hutchinson in Strathaven.

Mccallum (22) and 21-year-old Docherty were part of a group who chased Mr Hutchinson in two cars in the town’s Viewmount Crescent.

They repeatedly drove their cars at him at speed, knocking him to the ground and trapping him under one of the vehicles.

While he was stuck underneath the wheels and unable to make his escape, the pair rained blows on him.

They repeatedly kicked him on the body before smacking him on the head with a wheel brace, leaving him injured in an attempt to kill him.

The pair denied they had done anything wrong but were convicted of attempting to murder Mr Hutchinson following a trial at the High Court in Paisley this week.

Docherty was on bail for three other court cases at the time of the botched hit on December 24, 2014.

They were both cleared of a second charge of committing a breach of the peace during the same incident.

Prosecutors had claimed they conducted themselves in a disorderly manner, drove two cars at speed, revved the engines, threw a drill bit into the garden of 57 Viewmount Crescent and shouted, placing Kimberley Williamson and other residents in a state of fear and alarm.

Judge John Morris QC called for both men to be assessed by social workers ahead of sentencing and remanded them in custody.

Mccallum, of Hare lee-shill Road, and Docherty, of Fiveways Road, both Larkhall, are expected to learn their fate when they return to court later this month.
