Teenager is caged

Five months for 19-year-old

- Court reporter

An Uddingston teenager was last week caged for five months after he failed to comply with a community payback order.

Andrew Bonnar, of Gopher Avenue, Viewpark, had last September admitted a charge of assaulting Chloe Cusick at an address in Deanbrae Street on May 16 last year by repeatedly striking her on the head with a piece of wood, punching her on the head, and attempting to kick her on the body all to her injury.

The 19-year-old had also pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting, swearing and threatening violence at the Deanbrae Street address on May 16, 2015.

Not guilty pleas to charges of obstructing or hindering two police officers by struggling violently and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting and swearing and making threats had been accepted by the Crown.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court in November, Sheriff Vincent Smith imposed a community payback order, placing Bonnar on two years’ supervision, and ordering that he carry out 70 hours’ unpaid work, as an alternative to custody.

However, last Friday, at a community payback order review hearing, Sheriff Smith sentenced Bonnar to five months’ detention in a Young Offenders’ Institution due to Bonnar’s failure to comply with the CPO.

In a separate complaint, Bonnar denied charges of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by challenging Edward Johnson to a ‘square go’ and threatening to kill him; damaging property by throwing stones and breaking windows, denting the bodywork of a car – and throwing a stone at a window and breaking the window.

The alleged offences, all said to have occurred while Bonnar was on bail on another matter, cover an address in Gopher Avenue, Viewpark, last Thursday, June 30.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court last Friday, Sheriff Smith set the trial on these matters to August 4 with an intermediate diet of July 14. Sheriff Smith refused Bonnar bail and ordered he be detained in custody meantime.
