Thousands enjoy party weekend
Blantyre’s two-day gala weekend was a roaring success last weekend with thousands of revellers turning out to enjoy the events.
On Saturday over 2000 people attended the crowning of the ‘royal children,’ sports day, fairground, beer tent and 60 market stalls held in the grounds of the David Livingstone Centre.
Then on Sunday over 1000 people enjoyed the Live at Livvies music event, complete once again with the fairground and beer tent.
Despite the poor weather on Sunday families and friends alike donned their ponchos and regrouped at the centre grounds to watch eight solo artists and bands perform music of varying genres.
A spokesperson for Blantyre Community Committee said: “Blantyre Community Committee and the staff at David Livingstone Centre and National Trust for Scotland would like to thank everybody for coming along and to everybody who helped out and braved the weather in organising the event.
“We really pushed the boat out with this two-day event this year, putting on a wonderful show for Blantyre. We were thrilled to see so many people come back to the gala and enjoy a show which was bigger and better than last year.
“However, it was clear though that we needed more volunteers to assist with these type of events, especially in the set up and tidying afterwards. Both David Livingstone Centre and Committee volunteers were exceptionally run off their feet the whole weekend and are to be commended in their effort, even staying behind until late to ensure the park was completely litter free.”
Whilst it is unknown at this time if the renovation of the David Livingstone Centre museum will affect the event next year, a Blantyre Gala will still take place with venue to be confirmed in the New Year.
