Massimo Donati said it was brilliant to bag a goal on his debut as Hamilton thumped St Mirren 3-0 at the Superseal Stadium on Saturday.

Hamilton put on a performance that was a marked improvement on their display at Ayr – and the big Italian says if Accies can play like that on a regular basis, they can do well this season.

The midfielder said: “It was a brilliant start for me and the team. I scored a good goal and that’s always good.

“It was a good game, home games are sometimes different, and we were at our best, so that was good.

“We played well, we have to play every game like this and we can do well all season.

“We want to progress in the cup, we play to win the games and we’ll see what happens.”

Hamilton boss Martin Canning handed debuts to Donati and defender Jordan Mcgregor, while Scott Mcmann made his first start in the first team. Jack Breslin was also handed a debut when he was a late sub for Mcgregor.

The hosts started well and in three minutes an Alex D’acol knock-on sent Dougie Imrie down the left but his fierce shot was taken at the near post at the second attempt by Jamie Langfield.

At the other end, a knock-on from a throwin presented David Clarkson with a chance but his scissors-kick effort was saved by Remi Matthews.
